Influence of Cubism in Jewelry

Cubism began at an exhibition in Paris in the year 1907 by Paul Cézanne, a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter. He believed that the things around him including nature can be displayed in forms similar to spheres, cones and cylinders. In brief, he had created a flat and two dimensional view of the objects and landscape and this trickled down to other artistic areas such as jewelry, and fashion. His work inspired Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and many others.

Cubist movement was headed by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris in the early twentieth century. Inspired by Cubism, Art Modern Jewelers created wearable jewelry in geometric designs for the common man instead of gem encrusted jewelry for the rich. Jewelry designs underwent a tremendous transformation.

Large jewelry houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Boucheron used Indian, Persian and Egyptian motifs as their muse. While the smaller group of designer adopted the European motifs as their designs.

The cubist jewelry designs were also known as Art Deco designs. Jewelry designs became simple under the influence of cubism. It was during this period, jewelers introduced "paved" work where stones were cut into rectangles, triangles, squares, hexagonal, trapezoidal and other odd shapes to perfectly fit with the neighboring stone. Jewelers used diamonds as well as myriad of colored precious and semiprecious gemstones to create an expanse of shimmering color.

India too contributed to the cubist jewelry in form of turban pins, brooches and bracelets. Dainty flowers and leaves carved out of emeralds, sapphires and rubies have been the elements in Indian jewelry from time immemorial.

Today, cubist inspired jewelry pieces are available in Karatcraft. They are known for their simplicity with explosion of colors used in artistic ways. It’s specifically designed for a wallet conscious non-traditional woman.
